Sweet Sixteen

Cinderella came but her carriage was waiting and she had to be sent on her way except in this instance there was no glass slipper left behind, just lots of blood, sweat, and tears. Well at least that’s the case in this year’s NCAA basketball tourney and it has many people upset and crying that the magic of the tourney has faded.

As of right now the first day of the sweet sixteen is over and 12 teams remain. Of them are all 4 #1 seeds UConn, Louisville, Pitt, and North Carolina. Only two, 2 seeds are alive in Oklahoma who should beat #3 Syracuse tomorrow to advance and Michigan State who faces off with #3 Kansas. The lowest seeds in the tourney are #4 Gonzaga and #12 Arizona and either could become the Cinderella of this tournament if they advance to the Elite Eight but both are facing #1 seeds.

Now you can make the argument and say “but wait ‘Zona is a 12 seed!! and barely got in!! They ARE a Cinderella.” However, Arizona cannot be overlooked because not only do they play in the Pac-10, a power conference, but they were also 18-8 at one point beating teams like Gonzaga, Kansas, Washington, USC, and UCLA along the way before they decided to implode near the end of the season plus they have a 2-3 players that have a legit chance to make the NBA with Chase Budinger leading the way as a definite lottery selection this coming summer. Arizona should not have been a 12 seed but rather a top five seed had they not lost 5 of their last 8 games of the season.

You may then futilely cry “but Gonzaga is a mid-major team! They have to be a Cinderella.” Sorry but Gonzaga has been good for the last 5 years or so, so they can’t be thought of as a mid major anymore and plus they are a 4 seed in this year’s tourney. However, if they beat North Carolina tomorrow they could become the darling of this tourney and thought of as Cinderella although they are such a high seed.

The fans can cry all they want that there is no Cinderella this year but I ask them what is wrong with having the best teams in the tourney? I am all for the gigantic upsets but I want to see good basketball too, so I’m not disappointed that this March there is no Cinderella. The beauty of the tournament is seeing every team, regardless of what seed they are, try so hard to win the championship because they only have a limited number of chances and seeing the passion when teams either win or lose. The winning team always smiles and is ecstatic with joy while the losers all cry, in disappointment as they know they didn’t win, but at least they were given a chance and their hard work had paid off and for some there is no next year but for that one month they were surrounded by their brothers and shared the tumultuous ride that is March Madness together and that is something to be truly cherished.

'til next time,
Peace and Much Love To Ya

Slow News Weekend.

I just wanted to share with you all the comment I made in regards to the 'meanness' of Americans towards Canadians. If you're curious about the specifics of the altercation, Google "Fox being mean to Canada." Here is what I wrote:

This stint was brought to you by "Fox News Channel" on a show called "Red Eye". I don't think many Canadians even have FNC and I think even less people watch Red Eye.

These 'faux pundits' say whatever they want and continue to do so with no monitoring because a) it's on Fox News and b) no one watches the show.

Greg Gutfeld (bet many of you didn't know the host's name) and his 'guests' aren't being rude, they're just being American right-wing talking-heads who ran out of AIG jokes.

Canada shouldn't even care about this petty show and the false information it sends to its viewers because, once again, a) it's on Fox News and b) no one watches the show.

And besides, those stereotypes are well known by both Canadians and Americans, it shouldn't garner so much media attention anyway.

I made this comment on my Political Science class blog (I'm a geek yes) full of liberal university students so I hope they understand the language that I'm writing in and don't take offense to the words because I disregarded the death of the Canadian soldiers that prompted this topic on "Red Eye". In my defense, I'm offending everyone here so chillax =P

Ciao!

Hair and financial advice

Hello again,

Ok so I'm getting tired of hearing about this economic crisis. I don't really need people reminding me how crappy our future financial lives will be or want to be told how difficult it will be for me after I graduate.

But I'm lucky cos NZ tv media is full of crap.

I came across this thing the other night when watching the news. Apparently a bunch of old men in a small town in NZ were told to grow all their facial hair (beards, nose hair, ear hair the works!) towards the end of last year for an American movie to be filmed this year (cos NZ is totally the new Hollywood). The film company came across some problems and wouldn't answer their calls and have basically shafted them. So now all these old very hairy men are sitting around in a small country town contemplating shaving their faces.

Now these guys have been like this for a couple of months now and are still not sure if they should shave their beards etc for fear of losing their role as extras in a movie that may not be filmed.

My question for you is, how long would you wait (females pretend to me males) before you shaved your face? And do you think these men are stupid and should clean themselves up?

Continuing on the topic of hair.. I was watching Oprah yesterday and did you know that super expensive hair extensions are taken from India. Hindu's shave their heads in a religious sacrifice and then that hair is sold to American salons as hair extensions. Cheaper places take "dead hair" which is the hair that falls out after Indian women (in India) comb their hair and sell it to people who export the hair out.

Is it just me or does this sound a little gross? And does this change your mind about getting hair extensions.

Hey at least if you have nice hair you have options in these hard financial times. If the crisis gets too much for you, just shave your head.
